17th century images from De Monstris
rotten.com
Illustrations from the first illustrated edition of De Monstrorum,
published in 1634 by Fortunius Licetus. The book is sometimes known
as De Monstris and went through several editions. These are
teratological illustrations from the text, consisting of malformed animals
and humans. The copperplates are wonderful and executed in excellent style.
As you view the plates, you will notice certain humorous touches added
by the engraver, such as spiders, cobwebs, and various insects. Also
please note that a number of the illustrations do not occur in nature;
some of these were copied from earlier works such as Parey or Aldrovandi.
Images scanned directly from the copy in the rotten dot com collection.
Numbers refer to the original page numbers, though some engravings
occur more than once in the text.
